What color should i paint my room?

It's a fairly big room, but it's cut up weird. It has about 8 walls, and only one window. Plus that window is small and faces southeast, so i don't usually get much light out of it. The light I have on my ceiling is old, and it dims any light it gives. i had to take of this black shade thingy so the light would hit the ceiling and brighten up the room. It didn't help much because there is this black thing connected to it that stops light from going up. I can't get rid of it because it was my dad's room when he was a kid and he loves the light. i can't put in a good light bulb because he thinks it would be too much for the light. I'm on the top floor, so it gets really hot. i had to put in an air conditioner, so that blocks half the light that comes in. Also, my furniture is too big for the room. It came from an old castle my great-grandpa worked in and my great-grandma used it (i'm working on it). What color should i paint my room? I don't want white, even though it would be considered the best choice. i painted it once when i was little, and the color would be great if i had two windows, but one is too dark and 3 walls and all the corners get this really ugly shade of blue/green. I want i color that is relaxing and goes with my closet doors (because they aren't leaving). The closet doors are a golden brown color. I'm in high school, so if that helps, that's good.
