Can anyone help me with sm guidelines for GATE preparation after a long break of 5 yrs since my B tech in ECE.?

I completed my B tech in ECE in 2006, worked for 1 year in IT and then got married, came to US n took a break from official life for 3 years as I was denied job visa here. Now we r planning to move back to India and I would like to get into M tech course. Can anyone give me guidelines on GATE preparation? Has anyone had a similar experience of being forced to stay out of wrk inspite of ur sincere wish to wrk?
